John C. AlfanoJohn has been a labor arbitrator and a labor and commercial mediator in private practice since 1983, hearing cases in the public and private sectors, in such areas as police, fire, education, city, state and county government, manufacturing, waste management, electrical co-generation, employment, and commercial matters.

  • Preventative Mediation (Interest Based Bargaining) - Prepared for the Maine Labor Relations Board, April 1996, Revised: March 28, 1997 - A 21 page manual for facilitators and advocates using the interest based approach to dispute resolution.
  • Working Together For The Public Service - School Administrative District No. 57 and the Massabesic Teachers Association were recognized by The U.S. Department of Labor in The Report of The U.S. Secretary of Labor’s Task Force On Excellence In State And Local Government Through Labor-Management Cooperation of May 1996.

Advanced Mediation Skills For Postal Service Mediators - Training in the Transformative Approach to mediating disputes for the REDRESS Program, a program to provide Postal Service Employees with mediation.

Partners In Change - A training program provided by the U. S. Department of Labor to provide facilitators/mediators with a program to help labor and management become work place partners. The program has been adapted to non-union workplaces. The techniques and skills are transferable to resolving conflict between/among labor and non-labor interested parties.

Hay Wage Classification System - Training by the Hay Group, sponsored by the Maine Bureau of Human Resources.

Health Law And Bioethics - Boston University School of Law. A five day program to study theories of normative ethics, health law, and their relationships, allocation of resources, death and dying, human experimentation, health insurance, health care delivery and conflict resolution in medical/hospital facilities.

Various Workshops: Since 1971, I have attended workshops and training programs sponsored by the American Arbitration Association, Maine Labor Relations Board, Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, the National Education Association, Maine Association of Dispute Resolution Professionals, Maine Bar Association and the Maine Superior Court, all of which focused on negotiations, mediation and arbitration skills. I have made presentations for MLRB, New England Consortium of Labor Relations Agencies, Stetson University College of Law, the Maine Bar Association and the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources in various aspects of negotiation, mediation and arbitration.
